According to a YouGov poll, conducted for LBC Radio, ‘Almost half of those intending to vote to leave the EU, believe the referendum will be rigged against them’.
In this context, it’s probably worth remembering the 1992 referendum in France, the one that approved the Maastricht Treaty by the slenderest of margins (51 to 49 per cent). Because there were those who believed that that result was rigged as well.
‘It was so narrow that as I recall there were questions in France about gerrymandering,’ observed Iain Duncan Smith, in 2011. ‘Although they just won, whatever happened – even if they gerrymandered the victory – in effect they lost; it was a Pyrrhic victory.’
