Trump v. Corbyn: The quiz

There are surely more differences than similarities between Jeremy Corbyn and Donald Trump, even if polls suggest both will follow their impressive gold medals in party votes with silvers in general elections.

Still, the former trade union organiser from Wiltshire and the New York property developer do have a few rhetorical tics in common. Can you tell which of these quotes emerged from behind a beard, and which ones started life below what can loosely be described as a haircut?

On the media

1. ‘It is not “freedom of the press” when newspapers and others are allowed to say and write whatever they want even if it is completely false!’

2. ‘There is not one story on any election anywhere … that [media organisation] will not spin into a problem for me – it’s obsessive beyond belief.’

3. ‘I have got nothing but bad publicity from the dishonest and disgusting media.’

4. ‘[A particular critical columnist] is not a good guy at all. He seems kind of obsessed with me.’

On NATO

5. ‘I would prefer that we be able to continue, but if we are not going to be reasonably reimbursed for the tremendous cost of protecting these massive nations with tremendous wealth … I would be absolutely prepared to tell those countries, “Congratulations, you will be defending yourself.”’

6. ‘It operates way beyond its original 1948 area and its attempt to encircle Russia is one of the big threats of our time.’

On Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

7. ‘It is not unprovoked, and the right of people to seek a federal structure or independence should not be denied.’

8. ‘The people of Crimea, from what I’ve heard, would rather be with Russia than where they were.’

On Russia

9. ‘I think Putin and I will get along very well.’

10. ‘Russia Today [is] more objective on Libya than most.’
