Obviously, we at Lion & Unicorn would never wish to condone crime, but there are times when it’s hard to do anything but stand and applaud. It’s a question of scale: taking and driving away is reprehensible; taking and flying away is simply admirable. Particularly when the perpetrator is only sixteen years old, has never flown a plane before, and returns the vehicle – entirely undamaged – in a perfect landing.
Even better is the fact that this story (taken from the Newcastle Journal) happened in 1942, in the middle of the Second World War. One can only hope that the young man was found an appropriate role in the RAF when he was called up a couple of years later.
